Start with You
Getting started with a life that’s aligned with your purpose isn’t easy. We often get excited about a goal and rush toward it without stopping to ask: Am I actually ready for this?
This is where the self-audit comes in. A self-audit isn’t about criticizing yourself. It’s about getting curious and honest about who you are. Ask yourself: What do I already have? What do I still need? Think of it like taking inventory before starting a big project.
Preparing for Med School
When I first decided I wanted to pursue medical school, I couldn’t just say, “I’ll get in.” I had to know what was required for me specifically.
That meant:
Looking at med school requirements
Comparing those to what I already had
Identifying what I was missing
Reviewing my time management skills
Through that process, I realized I needed two years of undergrad courses to raise my GPA. I also needed to prepare for the MCAT.
Once I laid it out clearly, I had a full picture of what stood between me and my goal. Suddenly, I wasn’t lost or overwhelmed anymore. I had a starting point.
Why It Matters
Without a self-audit, you risk setting yourself up for frustration. You might chase a goal while ignoring gaps that will block you later. But with a self-audit, you build clarity. You know what’s in your toolkit and what needs to be added.
This clarity becomes your launching pad. From here, every step you take has purpose attached to it.
Try This Today
Grab a notebook and write:
What’s my big goal?
What do I already have that supports this goal? (skills, habits, experiences, resources)
What’s still missing?
You might be surprised at how much you already have.
